Essential Skills and Qualifications
To be successful in this role, a candidate must possess:
Certifications: A relevant certification from a recognized organization like the AAPC or AHIMA is almost always required. Examples include Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Certified Professional Coder (CPC), or Certified Outpatient Coder (COC).
Education: A high school diploma or equivalent is the minimum, but many employers prefer an associate's or bachelor's degree in Health Information Management or a related field.
Technical Knowledge: A strong knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and pharmacology is essential. Proficiency with various electronic health record (EHR) and coding software is also a must.
Soft Skills: Attention to detail, critical thinking, strong communication skills (especially for physician queries), and the ability to work independently are highly valued.
