While the exact time distribution varies based on the fleet type (e.g., dealer vs. fleet operator) and the vehicle's age, a technician's typical work distribution can be broken down into five main areas:
1. Diagnostic and Troubleshooting
This is the most technical and critical function, requiring advanced analytical skills. As modern vehicles are highly computerized, technicians are increasingly becoming high-tech problem solvers.
Computerized Diagnostics: Connecting to onboard computer systems (ECUs) using specialized software and scanners to retrieve fault codes and analyze real-time data from various sensors.
Root Cause Analysis: Systematically testing and inspecting components (e.g., electrical circuits, air lines, hydraulic pressure) to pinpoint the exact failure source—often on intermittent or complex issues.
Test Drives: Operating the commercial vehicle (often requiring a CDL) before and after repairs to verify the diagnosis and confirm the fix.
