Job Title: Boiler Operator
Department: Utilities
Reports To: Shift Managers
Team Size: 1 Operator + 2 Helpers
Boiler Type: 2 Ton/Hr Wood Fired
Role Summary
We are looking for a certified Boiler Operator to manage the operation of a 2-Ton Wood Fired Boiler. In this role, you will be supported by two helpers. Your primary focus will be on technical monitoring, safety compliance, and supervising the helpers to ensure efficient fuel feeding and ash disposal without wasting fuel.
Key Responsibilities
1. Operational Control & Technical Monitoring
Pressure & Water Level: Continuously monitor the steam pressure gauge and water level glass. Operate feed pumps and injectors to maintain safe levels.
Blowdown: Execute the bottom blowdown procedure personally once per shift to remove sludge.
Safety Valves: Test safety valves and alarms daily to ensure they are functioning correctly.
2. Supervision of Helpers (Wood & Ash)
Firing Supervision: Direct the 2 helpers on when to feed wood and how much to feed. Ensure they do not overfill the furnace (which causes smoke) or starve the fire (which drops pressure).
Ash Disposal: Instruct helpers to rake the grate and remove ash at specific intervals to prevent clinker formation.
Wood Management: Supervise helpers in bringing wood from the yard to the boiler point, ensuring they select the right mix of dry/wet wood.
3. Safety & Maintenance
Team Safety: Ensure your helpers are wearing safety gear (gloves, masks, shoes) and are standing at a safe distance during blowbacks or firing.
Tube Cleaning: Supervise the helpers during weekly fire tube brushing/cleaning to remove soot.
Logbook: Maintain the Boiler Logbook, recording pressure, temperature, and helper attendance.
Requirements
License: Valid Boiler Attendant Certificate (Mandatory).
Experience: 3+ years on wood/coal boilers. Experience managing assistants/unskilled labor is a plus.
Leadership Skills: Ability to give clear commands to helpers to maintain a steady firing rate.
Knowledge: Expert understanding of combustion—you must be able to look at the smoke/fire and tell the helpers to adjust the air or fuel.
